Writing and submitting articles to publishers in order to promote your business, services and products is a wise choice for any entrepreneur.  The only cost for this kind of marketing project is your time and, if you want the maximum benefits, the amount you pay your proofreader/editor.  
Many people are overwhelmed by the submission process and don't know where to begin.  I have outlined below the ten steps I take with each article submission project.  Having a process in place makes organizing submissions so much easier and removes the confusion of where of what to do first.
1. Start by having your article proofread and then add it to your website.  Make sure you have a catchy title and a by-line that compels readers to take action.
2. Use a text to html tool to format your by-line so that your URL will appear live when your article is posted on a site.  I recommend you use the tool at
3. Collect the information you'll need for most submission sites including:  title, author name, address, phone number, e-mail, website URL, topic, two line summary of the article, word count, line count, article URL, auto responder address (if available), document file names and 10-15 keywords.
4. Make a list of the type of submission sites appropriate for your article.  I use EzineAnnouncer to collect and keep track of my submission list and I always write down the categories that are a match for my article.  My latest submission qualified for more than 400 sites but your success depends upon your article topic.
5. Begin submitting to sites that accept articles by e-mail. Never send an attachment unless asked.  Incorporate the entire article into the e-mail and include an option for the recipient to opt-out of your list.
6. Your next step should be to sign-up for all new submission sites on your list that require registration.  Typically, you have to wait for a confirmation e-mail before submitting.  You can move on to the next step while you wait.
7. Submit to all sites you have registered for and to all sites not needing registration but offering a submission form.
8. Check your e-mail, confirm your new accounts and visit those sites to add your article.  Keep track of your login and password for each site.
9. Update your submission list by removing or correcting bounced e-mail addresses and URL errors.  You will also need to add your new submission sites to your list.
10. Create a report to keep on your computer with the name and URL of the sites you used for submission.  Update this list when you submit your older articles to newly discovered sites.
Create your own submission process by building on the steps I have provided and you will find your submissions taking less time while helping you to become more organized.

Here are some dos and don’ts for you to follow to get the best bang for your article marketing buck.
Do write a lot. Many people get the article-writing bug but then only write one or two articles. Then they give up and say it didn’t work. As with many marketing efforts, it takes time and repetition to get the word out. Keep writing. Some experts say you should write five or six articles a day to be effective.
Don’t make your articles puff pieces about yourself or your company. Web publishers are looking for content that is useful to their visitors.
Do write about subjects in your field that are of interest to you. Your passion will show in your writing and fire up your readers’ interest. They will be eager to go to your business.
Don’t write about something you don’t know about. Take the time to do what research you need to make your article understandable and enjoyable. Just be sure to give proper credit for the information you use.
Don’t plagiarize. It is wrong and hurts your credibility. You could also be sued for using someone else’s information without attribution.
Do make your headlines clear. The most effective is “Subject: Why your reader should read this.”
Don’t write a headline that doesn’t describe the article: “A lovely Christmas story” is not what your reader wants right now. He or she wants information now. A good headline tells the reader exactly what information is in the article.
Do keep your opening (or lead) paragraph short and sweet. Make it similar to the headline by using the same keywords. Again, this tells readers exactly what they will be getting.
Don’t forget to follow the headline and the lead paragraph when writing the rest of the article. Try not to switch subjects midstream.
Do use at least one link to your website within the article and perhaps those to other useful websites. It is one way your article draws attention to you and your business.
Don’t forget your reader. Keep in mind what your reader is looking for. Give them what they need.
Do use keywords and lots of them within the article. When people use a search engine, they type in keywords. Search engines rank content partially on the number of keywords they find in an article.
Don’t, however, just repeat keywords just to build up the number of them. Make sure the keyword you use has a legitimate place in your article.
Do remember to keep your sentences and paragraphs short. One way to do this is by using a list format: Use dos and don’ts, or try to create a list of ten things your readers should know about a topic.
Don’t use “$20 words” just to prove you know your subject. Vocabulary words were great in elementary school but pretentious in a marketing article. It is better to be simple and easily understood. For example, “use” is better than “utilize”.
Do review the guidelines of the free article directory and make sure your article follows its instructions. Revise your article if you need to.
Don’t submit your article without doing the following first: Proofreading it, using a spell checker and having a colleague read it. Each step is important and can keep you from making embarrassing and costly mistakes.
Do use your bio box as a sales tool. “Bill Jones is a business owner and an expert in health insurance. Visit billjonesinsurance. com and find 10 more tips for evaluating your health insurance plan.
Don’t overload your bio box with dull information: For example, “Bill Jones is the owner of Bill Jones Co. and grand-high poo-bah of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos. He and his dog Spike live in Ottumwa, Iowa.” tells the reader nothing about why they should trust your information and gives them nothing to remember your name once they click over to another website.

Not a promotional article for your website, but an article about something that is informative to the reader. In the article you use keywords and phrases that relate to your topic as well, much like you would optimize a webpage. Your article when reprinted will be the text of a webpage or webpages.
In the author bio section at the bottom is some info about you and links to your website. It is suggested that you put in one link to your main page and one to an interior page that fits the article you are writing.
If your article is submitted to websites that take article submissions and offers free content to webmasters, then webmasters choose to repost your article on their websites, the links in the author bio section become links from their websites to your website.
Now lets go on to the myths and facts about article marketing.
MYTH: Article marketing doesn’t really help you all that much.
FACT: Article Marketing can help you increase your link popularity and be a source of some of the most targeted traffic you can get.
MYTH: Reprinted Articles only get indexed as supplemental pages, therefore it doesn’t help enough to make it worthwhile.
FACT: Depending on where the article gets submitted to, the article itself can get a top 10 listing in major search engines and not as a supplemental page.
MYTH: Submitting your article everywhere creates duplicate content and the search engines will punish or discount those pages as a result.
FACT: If search engines punished duplicate content in the way that myth suggests then all rss feeds that cause a post in a blog to be reproduced to be discounted or published and they are not. The New York Times articles and CNN stuff is blasted all over the web and are not punished or discounted.
Duplicate content is two webpages that are around 70% similar, not two webpages that have similar text on them.
MYTH: The only way article marketing works is you write an article then submit it to thousands of article submission websites.
FACT: There is more than one way to make article marketing work for you. The way mentioned above works okay if you are looking to get a lot of links back to your website whether they are related or not and can be effective if you currently have very little or no link popularity at all.
Another way is to hand submit your article to article submission websites that only accept articles related to your topic. This is more difficult but the links help you more just through the submissions and it’s more likely that the websites that pick up and repost your article will be also related to your topic which can help you with better links and targeted traffic.
Yet another way is to write a very high quality article that you really take your time on and research. You then choose a very high traffic website related to your topic. One that has great PR and a lot of visitors.
Email them your article and offer them an exclusive if they will print your article with your links included in the bio. If your article is of good quality and they get an exclusive you have a good chance they will post your article there.
This one posting of your article can be more powerful than the mass submitted article method if you choose the website you submit it to carefully.
Last but not least, posting your article exclusively on your own website is a great way to add fresh content and if the article is good, people will link directly to the article increasing both traffic and PR for your webpage where you posted the article. But for this to work you need to already have some traffic to work with.
MYTH: You should always post your article in your website first, then wait to get crawled by the search engines before submitting the article elsewhere.
FACT: Adding articles to your own website is called adding content. Submitting those articles to other websites is called article marketing. With article marketing you don’t want the article indexed on your website first.
Yes you read that right. You do not want the article indexed on your website first. You are or should already be doing SEO on your website and adding fresh content to your website for the search engines to get traffic from them.
Submitting articles to other websites and having the search engines find it there first gives another gateway that people can find your website through.
If the websites that you submitted your articles to get crawled often, then having your article appear there with the links intact will get your website crawled as well.
If the websites you submitted your article to are getting indexed well by the search engines, then your article being found on their website first might get it in the top 10 results.
Placing it into your own website with no or low PR might not have gotten the article indexed at all.
